Doch ausgerechnet der ber\u00fchmteste Aktienindex der Welt ist zugleich einer der ungew\u00f6hnlichsten \u2013 und aus heutiger Sicht in vielerlei Hinsicht aus der Zeit gefallen. Seine Konstruktion stammt aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, seine Gewichtung folgt einer Logik, die heute kaum noch jemand f\u00fcr sinnvoll h\u00e4lt. Trotzdem hat der Dow Jones seine Berechtigung. F\u00fcr Anleger stellt sich allerdings die entscheidende Frage: Reicht Tradition als Investmentargument \u2013 oder ist der S&amp;P 500 l\u00e4ngst die bessere Wahl?<\/p>\n<h3>Ein B\u00f6rsenmythos mit \u00fcber 130 Jahren Geschichte<\/h3>\n<p>Der Dow Jones Industrial Average geh\u00f6rt zu den \u00e4ltesten Aktienindizes der Welt. Erfunden wurde er von dem Finanzjournalisten Charles Henry Dow, Mitgr\u00fcnder des Wall Street Journal, und seinem Gesch\u00e4ftspartner Edward Jones. Am 26. Mai 1896 ver\u00f6ffentlichten sie erstmals einen Durchschnitt aus 12 Industrieunternehmen. Ziel war es, die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung der Vereinigten Staaten in einer einzigen Kennzahl abzubilden.<\/p>\n<p>Heute umfasst der Index 30 der bekanntesten US-Unternehmen. Die urspr\u00fcnglichen Stahl-, Eisenbahn- und \u00d6lkonzerne sind l\u00e4ngst verschwunden. Stattdessen dominieren Namen wie Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Visa oder inzwischen auch Alphabet. Der Dow hat sich also ver\u00e4ndert \u2013 seine Berechnungsmethode dagegen kaum. Genau darin liegt sein gr\u00f6\u00dftes Problem.<\/p>\n<h3>Die Krankheit des Dow-Jones-Index<\/h3>\n<p>Die meisten Anleger gehen davon aus, dass ein Aktienindex die gr\u00f6\u00dften Unternehmen nach ihrem B\u00f6rsenwert gewichtet. Beim DAX, Euro Stoxx 50 oder S&amp;P 500 ist das auch der Fall. Beim Dow Jones dagegen nicht.<\/p>\n<p>Hier entscheidet der Aktienkurs \u00fcber das Gewicht eines Unternehmens \u2013 nicht dessen Marktkapitalisierung. Eine Aktie mit einem Kurs von 500 Dollar beeinflusst den Index deshalb f\u00fcnfmal st\u00e4rker als eine Aktie zu 100 Dollar, selbst wenn das Unternehmen dahinter deutlich kleiner ist. Diese Konstruktion wirkt heute fast skurril.<\/p>\n<p>Denn der Aktienkurs allein sagt nichts \u00fcber die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung eines Unternehmens aus. Ob eine Aktie 50 oder 500 Dollar kostet, h\u00e4ngt oft nur davon ab, wie viele Aktien ein Unternehmen ausgegeben hat oder ob es in der Vergangenheit Aktiensplits durchgef\u00fchrt hat.<\/p>\n<p>Apple und Nvidia sind die besten Beispiele. Beide Konzerne geh\u00f6ren zu den wertvollsten Unternehmen der Welt. Weil sie ihre Aktien mehrfach gesplittet haben, liegt ihr Aktienkurs vergleichsweise niedrig. Im Dow Jones spielen sie deshalb eine geringere Rolle, als ihre wirtschaftliche Bedeutung vermuten l\u00e4sst.<\/p>\n<p>Umgekehrt k\u00f6nnen Unternehmen wie Goldman Sachs oder Caterpillar zeitweise deutlich mehr Einfluss auf den Index haben \u2013 schlicht, weil ihre Aktien einen h\u00f6heren Nominalpreis besitzen. Das ist ungef\u00e4hr so, als w\u00fcrde man das Gewicht eines Autos nach dem Preis seiner Reifen bestimmen.<\/p>\n<h3>Alphabet macht den Dow moderner \u2013 aber nicht besser<\/h3>\n<p>Mit der Aufnahme der Google-Mutter Alphabet Ende Juni haben die Indexverwalter auf eine offensichtliche Schw\u00e4che reagiert. Dass eines der gr\u00f6\u00dften Unternehmen der Welt lange Zeit nicht im Dow vertreten war, wirkte zunehmend absurd. Doch Alphabet behebt lediglich ein Symptom \u2013 nicht die eigentliche Krankheit.<\/p>\n<p>Der Dow bleibt ein Index mit nur 30 Unternehmen. Welche Titel aufgenommen oder entfernt werden, entscheidet ein Komitee von S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices gemeinsam mit dem Wall Street Journal. Klare mathematische Regeln gibt es nicht. Der Index ist damit weniger ein objektives Marktbarometer als vielmehr eine redaktionelle Auswahl bedeutender US-Konzerne. Gerade das macht ihn zwar spannend, aber eben auch wenig repr\u00e4sentativ.<\/p>\n<h3>Der S&amp;P 500 bildet Amerika besser ab<\/h3>\n<p>Wer wissen m\u00f6chte, wie sich der US-Aktienmarkt tats\u00e4chlich entwickelt, schaut heute auf den S&amp;P 500. Der Unterschied k\u00f6nnte kaum gr\u00f6\u00dfer sein. Der S&amp;P 500 umfasst rund 500 der gr\u00f6\u00dften b\u00f6rsennotierten US-Unternehmen und gewichtet sie nach ihrer Marktkapitalisierung. Je wertvoller ein Unternehmen ist, desto gr\u00f6\u00dfer ist sein Anteil am Index. Genau so funktioniert der Aktienmarkt schlie\u00dflich auch in der Realit\u00e4t.<\/p>\n<p>Damit deckt der S&amp;P 500 rund 80 Prozent der gesamten Marktkapitalisierung der USA ab. Branchenverschiebungen spiegeln sich automatisch wieder. Wachsen Technologieunternehmen schneller als Industrieunternehmen, steigt ihr Gewicht. Verliert ein Konzern an B\u00f6rsenwert, schrumpft auch sein Einfluss. Der Index passt sich also permanent der wirtschaftlichen Realit\u00e4t an.<\/p>\n<h3>Ganz ohne Schw\u00e4chen ist aber auch der S&amp;P 500 nicht<\/h3>\n<p>Gerade weil der S&amp;P 500 die B\u00f6rsenrealit\u00e4t so exakt widerspiegelt, ist sein gr\u00f6\u00dfter Nachteil zugleich seine gr\u00f6\u00dfte St\u00e4rke. Die <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftd.de\/boerse\/maerkte\/magnificent-7-aktien-wie-riskant-ist-tech-konzentration-in-msci-world-und-anderen-etf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sogenannten \u201eMagnificent Seven\u201c<\/a> \u2013 Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, Alphabet und Tesla \u2013 machen inzwischen einen erheblichen Teil des Index aus. L\u00e4uft die Technologiebranche gut, profitiert der gesamte Index \u00fcberproportional. Allerdings ist dieses Risiko kein Konstruktionsfehler, sondern Ausdruck der tats\u00e4chlichen Marktverh\u00e4ltnisse. Die gro\u00dfen Technologiekonzerne sind eben inzwischen so dominant geworden.<\/p>\n<h3>Die historische Bilanz spricht eine klare Sprache<\/h3>\n<p>Die Geschichte mag auf der Seite des Dow Jones stehen \u2013 die Rendite dagegen eher auf der des S&amp;P 500 und vor allem des Nasdaq 100.<\/p>\n<p>Ein Blick auf die vergangenen 20 Jahre zeigt eindrucksvoll, wie unterschiedlich die 3 gro\u00dfen US-Indizes von den strukturellen Ver\u00e4nderungen der amerikanischen Wirtschaft profitiert haben. W\u00e4hrend der technologielastige Nasdaq 100 von der beispiellosen Erfolgsgeschichte von Unternehmen wie Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon oder Alphabet getragen wurde und f\u00fcr Euro-Anleger eine Gesamtrendite von rund 2.242 Prozent erzielte \u2013 das entspricht einer durchschnittlichen j\u00e4hrlichen Rendite von etwa 17,5 Prozent \u2013, fiel der Zuwachs der beiden anderen Indizes deutlich moderater aus.<\/p>\n<p>Der marktbreite S&amp;P 500 legte im gleichen Zeitraum in Euro um rund 771 Prozent zu und erreichte damit eine annualisierte Rendite von etwa 11,4 Prozent inklusive reinvestierter Dividenden. Der Dow Jones Industrial Average kam auf rund 560 Prozent beziehungsweise knapp 9,9 Prozent pro Jahr.<\/p>\n<p>Dabei gilt allerdings: Diese beeindruckenden Renditen spiegeln nicht nur die Entwicklung der US-Aktienm\u00e4rkte wider. Auch der \u00fcber weite Strecken starke US-Dollar hat die Performance f\u00fcr Anleger aus dem Euroraum zus\u00e4tzlich befl\u00fcgelt. Wechselkurseffekte k\u00f6nnen die Rendite internationaler Investments erheblich beeinflussen \u2013 sowohl positiv als auch negativ.<\/p>\n<p>Die Unterschiede zwischen den Indizes \u00fcberraschen dennoch kaum. Der Nasdaq 100 profitierte wie kein anderer Index vom Siegeszug der Digitalisierung und der Dominanz der amerikanischen Technologiekonzerne. Der S&amp;P 500 bildet diese Entwicklung ebenfalls ab, allerdings deutlich breiter diversifiziert. Der Dow Jones hingegen blieb seiner traditionellen Struktur treu und konnte an der Rally der neuen B\u00f6rsenschwergewichte nur eingeschr\u00e4nkt partizipieren.<\/p>\n<p>Genau darin liegt bis heute sein gr\u00f6\u00dfter Nachteil. Wer langfristig m\u00f6glichst nah an der Entwicklung der amerikanischen Wirtschaft investieren m\u00f6chte, f\u00e4hrt mit einem breit aufgestellten Marktindex wie dem S&amp;P 500 in aller Regel besser als mit einem Auswahlindex aus lediglich 30 Unternehmen.<\/p>\n<h4>Der passende ETF: iShares Dow Jones Industrial Average UCITS ETF (DE)<\/h4>\n<p>Wer dennoch gezielt in den Dow Jones investieren m\u00f6chte, findet mit dem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/de\/privatanleger\/de\/produkte\/251770\/ishares-dow-jones-industrial-average-ucits-etf-de-fund?switchLocale=y&amp;siteEntryPassthrough=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iShares Dow Jones Industrial Average UCITS ETF<\/a> (ISIN: DE0006289390) den bekanntesten Vertreter.<\/p>\n<p>Der ETF bildet den Dow physisch nach und investiert direkt in die 30 Indexmitglieder. Die Gesamtkostenquote liegt bei 0,51 Prozent pro Jahr und geh\u00f6rt damit zu den h\u00f6chsten unter den gro\u00dfen US-Indexfonds. Genau das ist sein gr\u00f6\u00dftes Manko.
